Since Coretax went live, a new worry keeps coming up whenever I talk with small-business owners in Indonesia: Coretax itself. Some received a letter, some only heard rumors from fellow traders, some are simply anxious without knowing exactly why. So today, an honest note: how to face Coretax without the dread.

First, what Coretax actually is. It's the tax office's (DJP) new integrated administration system. Tax life used to be scattered across many places — file in one portal, issue your invoices (faktur) in another app, keep your certificate somewhere else again. Coretax pulls it all into one door. The transition has felt messy for everyone — so if you're anxious, it's mostly about the change, not because you did something wrong.

Here's the reassuring part: for most small businesses, what you truly need to handle is not much. The first thing to know — are you a PKP (a VAT-registered business) yet, or not? Many small businesses are still below the threshold and aren't required to issue tax invoices (faktur pajak) at all; they just keep their tax number tidy and file simply. If you are a PKP, there are two disciplines that matter. First, guard your electronic certificate (sertifikat elektronik) and passphrase — don't let them get lost or expire. The real secret is decidedly unglamorous: clean books all year round. Coretax season only hurts when your records are still a pile of receipts at the last minute.
